St. Damien of Molokai

Jozef was born and raised in Belgium as the seventh child in a family of farmers.

He decided he wanted to become a priest like his older brother, and in 1860 he joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and was named Brother Damien. Damien became a missionary and was ordained a priest in Hawaii.

It was there that he felt called to go and help those who were sick with leprosy (leprosy is a disease that puts sores all over your body).

He moved to the island of Molokai where he began to serve the lepers.

He built a church, nursed the sick, dug graves, and helped establish schools and farms.

Fr. Damien knew that each leper was a special person that needed to be treated with love.

After living with the lepers for 16 years, Fr. Damien died of leprosy.

We can ask St. Damien to pray for us whenever we serve those who are sick, lonely, or outcasts.

St. Damien, Pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 

Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for me. May I learn to love others like you do. Help me to make this world a better place by serving others wherever I go. Amen.
