St. John Paul II
Pope John Paul II (JPII) was born in Poland in 1920, with the name Karol Wojtyla.
Growing up, he was very athletic and would often play sports with his friends.
In university, Karol loved to write and act in plays, but after his father died, he decided to enter the seminary instead.
After becoming a priest at the age of 26, Karol worked in a parish and had a group of young people that he would take on hiking and kayaking trips.
In 1978, when he was only 58, Karol was elected pope and took the name John Paul II.
During his time as pope, he traveled to over 120 countries and canonized hundreds of saints.
He practiced excellence in everything he did and made a huge difference in the world.
He died on April 2, 2005, and his funeral was one of the largest in history. Over 4 million people came to say goodbye to John Paul the Great.
